Delicious Amish Cinnamon Rolls
Yum! You will want to try this Amish Cinnamon Rolls recipe!! If you have ever been to an Amish restaurant or tried food they have made, you know it is so tasty!!
We have an Amish community around an hour away and you can go to their local store to shop for food, bulk items, and it is so neat!! I used to want to be Amish when I was a kid!!
So when I saw this recipe for Amish style Cinnamon Rolls over at The Lazy Daisy Kitchen, I knew I needed to make this!! I whipped these up and I did have to add more flour to the recipe as well as extra water. I found the dough didn’t form exactly how it should. I am not sure if it was living in a different area and humidity took play or what.
All in all I got it to work and the cinnamon rolls turned out great! They have such a rich and delicious filling that has for sure won a place in my heart!!
These are better then any other cinnamon rolls I have ever eaten! The dough isn’t very sweet which is nice because the filling and icing makes up for it :-)!
I didn’t alter the recipe much besides adding a bit of extra flour and water. Since it is an Amish recipe I wanted to keep it as true as it could be! So read below to find out how to make these delicious rolls!!
Now for the original recipe she called to use only half of the dough you make. I decided to make a double batch of cinnamon rolls. I baked one and then wrapped the others up and tossed in the freezer to make at a later time!
You can choose to make regular bread with the other half of dough, divide it out and make just enough for 1 batch of rolls, or double the recipe like I did!
I found that actually using butter really gave it that unique flavor so I recommend using it over margarine, or the flavor will be a bit off!
Amish Cinnamon Rolls Recipe
Ingredients:
For the Dough for Rolls:
- 2 cups warm water
- 1 1/2 tbsp. Active Dry Yeast
- 1/3 cup white sugar
- 1 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 6 cups flour (I used bread flour but any will work)
- A little extra flour and water to get the dough to meet your consistency.
For the Filling for Rolls:
- 2 cup brown sugar
- 2tbsp. cinnamon
- 1/2 cup butter, melted (not Margarine)
For the Icing:
- 1/2 cup butter, melted (not Margarine)
- 2cup confectioners sugar
- 2 tsp. vanilla
- milk
Directions:
- To make the bread dough – I put the water sugar, and yeast in a bowl and let it set for about 5 minutes. It will start to bubble up and then you know you are good to go on making the dough. If it doesn’t bubble up, let it set a few more minutes, till it does.
- Next you will add your salt, vegetable oil into the yeast mix, and mix. I used my KitchenAid Stand Mixer
and the dough hook. You will then add a cup at a time to the dough till it forms into a ball. Depending on where you live you might have to add a little extra water or flour to the mixture like me, for it to form a normal ball. The dough shouldn’t be super sticky and should form a ball nicely. - Once dough is done, grease the bowl, and put dough back in and allow to rise for around 1 hour in a warm spot. Once dough has risen, you will tear it in half, and roll out the dough into a big rectangle, on a floured surface.
- Once you have the first half of dough rolled out, you will take the melted butter and spread over the dough, leaving about 1 inch around the sides. Take your brown sugar mixture and pour half of the mixture over the dough and spread evenly. The other half of filling will go for the other dough you have set aside.
- After that is spread evenly you will start to roll the dough up tightly. Once rolled, start to cut dough into equal parts. I got around 15 rolls from the dough.
- Put the sliced rolls into a greased 9×13 pan. Allow to rise for about 20 minutes. Place in a 350 degree oven and bake for about 20-25 minutes.
- Right before rolls are done mix up your icing. I made mine a bit thicker, and then once rolls came out, I spread evenly over the rolls. It melted some and really made the rolls taste delicious!
- Depending on thickness of rolls cooking time could vary. Cook until light brown and dough is cooked through.
- Now repeat with steps to make another set of rolls. You can freeze them or cook them now.

They do take a bit of work but it is a good payoff for sure. Now just make sure to have a little extra flour and water to get your dough to the right consistency. I shared I had a bit of difficulty but by playing with it, I got the dough to form :-)!

How do you handle yours when you freeze them and how long does it take them to thaw out in rise
Jeana715 says
I made these cinnamon rolls last week, with a batch of chili for dinner, and they turned out perfectly! This is truly the best dough that I’ve worked with, so I’m just going to use it for other things too. But my Mr. has talked about those rolls every single day, & swearing that they’re the BEST he’s EVER had!! And he’s picky..lol I just whipped up another batch to make fry bread for my lunch today, and Indian Taco’s tonight for my, “Mr. Cinnamon Roll Efficinato!”๐
Thanks so much for sharing, and best wishes to you and yours this 2020!! ๐๐๐ฅ
Kelsey says

I was wondering…I know sometimes when I’ve made cinnamon rolls, they get hard the next day and we can’t eat them all on the first day. I was wondering this recipe is different and with the butter I was wondering if they stayed soft for a couple of days.
Christina says
Oh my goodness I made these rolls last night for my Mother for Mothers Day, cinnamon rolls are her favorite!! I’ve just recently learned that I can actually make and bake beautiful yummy rolls, breads etc. These by far are the absolute best I’ve made, and thank you so much for sharing!!
Casey says
What are the instructions for when taking them out of the freezer to bake? Can these be refrigerated overnight and baked the next morning? Trying to plan Christmas morning breakfast without getting up early on Christmas!
Sheri says
Love these cinnamon rolls, made one batch and a loaf of bread. I used less flour than the recipe called for by almost 1/2 cup, not sure why that happened! I did a thinner glaze and like that lighter icing! Thanks for the recipe!
Joy Fiske says
These are delicious. I took a quarter of the dough and made ham and cheese rolls for my husband. Then made a quarter pan of cinnamon pecan and the other half made by the recipe as written.
Kelsey says
I love the idea of making these into ham and cheese rolls! I’m definitely going to try that myself.
