Snowflake Decor Ideas for Your Home

The winter season is here! Just because it’s the holiday season, doesn’t mean that your decorating has to be holiday themed. Celebrate winter itself by decorating with snowflakes! I have always been a silver vs. gold person and since snowflake themed decorations so often incorporate silver accents I think they make such a beautiful accent to my home. My very favorite decoration ever, is a small tea light tower with dangling snowflakes. I’m pretty sad that I can no longer find that particular decoration, but I have found lots of other awesome alternatives!

If you’re ready to decorate your home for winter, check out these snowflake decor ideas for your home. They include everything from candles, to wall art to stand alone decorations you can place on a side table or as your table centerpiece. And besides decorating your own house, these pieces make great gift ideas! Since snowflakes are non-denominational, they make a great winter time gift for anyone, regardless or religious affiliation.

9 Smart Ways to Use Baking Soda

Baking soda is a bit of a miracle substance. Sure, you can use it to bake, just as its name implies, but there are a lot more things you can do with baking soda! The big advantage is that it is a natural substance with the scientific name sodium bicarbonate –  a chemical compound with the formula NaHCO₃. Baking soda is a salt composed of sodium ions and bicarbonate ions. And while those facts might be helpful in a trivia game, what is really helpful is knowing the many ways you can use baking soda around the house!

9 Smart Ways to Use Baking Soda

Skin Exfoliator: If you strive for clean, smooth, baby-like skin, make a nice exfoliating paste by mixing three parts baking soda with one part water. Gently massage it on your skin, getting as much coverage as you want. Once it’s all massaged on your skin, rinse it all off with some warm water and enjoy the smoothness.

Toilet Cleaner: I know, I know…none of us want to do it. Not a single person in the house wants to deal with THAT one dreaded job. But hey, you have baking soda on your side to make it easier! Dump roughly a single cup into the toilet bowl and let it sit for about an hour (catch up on your Hulu queue while you’re waiting). After that hour has passed, go back and flush the toilet. You’ll now have a clean and odorless toilet.

Homemade Clay: The artist in your family (maybe that’s you?) might find this project fun: Mix some baking soda in with 1 1/4 cups water and 1 cup of cornstarch. The result is something quite similar to store bought modeling clay. After using it, store it in an airtight tin to maximize its shelf life.

Car Surface Cleaner: Your car gets you from point A to Point B and then back to A again at the end of the day. Naturally, you want the best for your car so it can get you back to point B the next day. Keep your car’s paint job nice and shiny by making a baking soda paste and rubbing it all over your car’s dulling paint job. Let the paste sit for five to fifteen minutes and then rinse your car off. Voila! Now your Camaro looks as good as the day you bought it back in ’72.

Deicing Salts Substitute: Those of us who experience winter weather have had that moment: you walk in from the cold winter air, dust your jacket off, and start the boring, monotonous task of getting all the salt off your shoes. Would you believe that baking soda can also help you here? Substitute a fine dusting for all those salts you’re tossing onto your driveway and patio. Baking soda provides you with good traction and melts the ice just as well as salt. Plus, it won’t cause damage to your shoes or your floors.

Deodorant: Stick or spray? You don’t have to pick either with baking soda! Its magnificent quality of being able to make anything smell nice makes it a viable option when choosing deodorant in the morning. There are no fancy steps to applying it; just firmly pat the baking soda under your armpits and go about your day.

Tougher Laundry Detergent: You might have heard about using vinegar to brighten colors in your laundry before, but what can baking soda do? Half a cup mixed in with your detergent makes your detergent work much more effectively. Your clothes will be cleaner and your colors brighter. I would say you probably don’t want to mix the vinegar trick with the baking soda trick, though…your clothes probably wouldn’t live through it.

Deodorize Your Home: This is probably the most familiar use for baking soda (beyond baking, of course): It can deodorize just about anything. Put an open box in the back of your fridge to keep odors bearable, sprinkle some across the bottom of your trash can before you put a new bag in to keep the smells at bay, and leave a snowstorm of the stuff on your living room carpet before you go to work (just don’t forget to vacuum it all up when you get home!).

Personal Foot Bath: Chances are a personal sauna for your entire family to relax in is beyond your budget. Still, you can experience the soothing spa experience with baking soda in a nice foot bath. Simply fill a tub with warm water, then add and stir in at least tablespoons of baking soda.

I hope these tips have given you some new ideas on how to use our cheap but super effective friend to all, baking soda. What other ideas do you have?

Here is My Super Easy Pecan Pie Recipe!

Easy Pecan Pie

I love to make Pecan Pies! They are such a delicious creation and I love the ooey-gooey filling they have. To me no other pie can compare to the fabulous taste of a Pecan Pie :-)! I normally get asked to make my Pecan Pie for family gathering for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Everyone says how hard they are to make, and I am not sure if they have a hard recipe or what.. because I find they are simple to make!!

This recipe I have had for years, I can’t remember when I found it! I am pretty sure it was in one of my parent’s old recipe books! Their is no stove-top needed like some recipes call for! This is an easy pecan pie recipe, you pretty much dump all the ingredients in together, stir, then pour and pan and bake!!

I am all about easy recipes that taste like they would take hours to bake!! This year for Thanksgiving I made two, one for us and then I gave one to my sister for her to take out and share with her husband’s side of the family dinner! She ended up texting that she loved the recipe!!!

So enough of this chitter-chatter and on to the recipe… shall we?!?

Pecan Pie

Super Easy Pecan Pie Recipe

Ingredients

  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup corn syrup (I use the light colored one)
  • 2 tbs melted butter
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 1/3 cup pecan halves
  • 1 deep dish pie crust (or you can choose to make own crust, just make sure it is a deep pan)

Instructions

  1. First off preheat your oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Then I tossed the eggs into my KitchenAid and turned on low, once they were somewhat beat I added in the sugar and the corn syrup.
  3. Once that is well incorporated add in the vanilla and salt and butter. Once that is well mixed I turn the mixer off. Toss in the nuts and stir with a spatula, so they don’t get too beat up from the blender.
  4. Pour the mix into your pie crust, and I always put aluminum foil around the crust, that way it doesn’t over-cook.
  5. Bake in the pre-heated oven for 15 minutes. Then you will want to reduce the heat to 350 degrees and bake for 35-40 minutes.
  6. You will want the pie to look nice golden brown and slightly puffy. Then cool on a cooling wrack and then wrap it up. I always put ours in the fridge until we are ready to eat it.

As you can see from the recipe, it is truly easy. When you pour out the mix into the pie pan, the nuts spread themselves over the pie. I always thought you would have to hand place them, but they do it all themselves!!

Pecan Pie

If you’re lucky enough to have a source of fresh pecans still in the shell (like we did when my sister lived in Austin), you will still have to shell them, which can be hard work! A nut cracker can make that a lot easier and quicker. It protects you from beat-up fingers too. This is a pretty cool option from NewFrog:

Manual Heavy Duty Nut Cracker

What is your favorite pie? I would say for me Pecan Pie and Cherry are pretty close tied for first place!! Also if you choose to make this pie, I would love for you to come back and share your thoughts on the recipe!!

Happy Baking!

This delicious and easy pecan pie recipe is so simple that even a beginner can bake it! It makes the perfect Thanksgiving dessert, or go-to pie for any time of year.
