Kindergarten Math Activity: Make an Equation Board

Is your child grappling with math facts? Mastering the concept of numbers is such a troublesome task in itself that it can be very difficult to introduce math equations without perplexing him. Don’t fret! It can be done painlessly with this simple, hands-on equation board. Using just cardboard, string, and beads, with this kindergarten math activity your child will be able to physically create equations and visually count the beads until she becomes proficient at addition and subtraction. This is sure to help  your child have more fun while learning math!

Equation Board Math Activity

What You Need:

  • Piece of Cardboard (approximately 12” x 16”)
  • Elastic string
  • Scissors
  • 20 or more beads

What You Do:

  1. Write “+” and “=” signs horizontally across the top of the long side of the cardboard with spaces in front of and after both signs.
  2. Write “-” and “=” signs horizontally across the bottom of the long side of the cardboard with spaces in front of and after both signs.
  3. Cut two slits on both of the short sides of the piece of cardboard.
  4. Cut two long pieces of elastic string. One will be the addition string, while the other will be the subtraction string.
  5. String the beads on each piece of the elastic, then tie them around the long sides of the board, nestling the strings in the slits so that they’re secured.
  6. Encourage your child to move the beads along each of the elastic strings to illustrate number sentences as he says them out loud. For example, the equation “2 + 3 = 5” would be depicted on the equation board as two beads in front of the plus sign, three beads after the plus sign, and five beads after the equal sign.

Always remember: with math facts, repetition and memorization are crucial. Try combining this teaching aid with number lines and other math games to make struggles with addition and subtraction facts a thing of the past!

With this Kindergarten Math Activity, your child can make an equation board to be introduced to addition and subtraction equations without being perplexed!

Super Easy Homemade Taco Seasoning Recipe

I don’t know about you, but I like to save money by making my own homemade food like this Easy Homemade Taco Seasoning.  In this fast paced world we live in, it’s so easy to just live off of processed food. I am guilty of this from time to time myself. A few years ago, I decided to try to make some of my own seasonings. I was so surprised by how easy it is and how much more flavorful our food tastes!

Easy Homemade Taco Seasoning

My family absolutely loves any food that is Mexican or Tex-Mex. We could live off of tacos and be completely content. Okay, I would still need chocolate to survive, but we could almost survive off of tacos alone! The best part of most of the Mexican dishes I make is that they are inexpensive and I can use my own Homemade Taco Seasoning to save even more money. Most of the ingredients you probably already have in your cabinet, so this is an inexpensive recipe as well!

This seasoning is great because it doesn’t have all the sodium and you know exactly each of the ingredients that goes in it. You can add it to tacos, burritos, enchiladas or any other Mexican dish you can think of. It is also delicious if you add it to some ranch dressing for a little kick!  I would also recommend my sister’s Easy Beef Enchilada Recipe!  Just add 2 heaping tablespoons and 1 cup of water to the browned hamburger and simmer for 5 minutes.

I also love to decorate my kitchen with homemade spices and seasonings. The look of mason jars filled with different seasonings adds a special “homey” feeling and an inviting atmosphere. If you plan to use Mason Jars, you can add easy flip-top lids for quick access.

Another handy option is these glass spice bottles that have a shaker top built in. They are perfect for storing spices and they’re inexpensive too!

No Sew 4th of July Flag Bunting Process Start

Supplies:

½ yard Red and White Stripe fabric
¼ yard denim fabric or you can use an old pair of blue jeans
hot glue
hot glue gun
burlap
white acrylic paint
small paint brush

No Sew 4th of July Flag Bunting Stars

Instructions:

  1. Cut the red and white striped fabric to approximately 9 ¾ x 5 ½ inches.  We cut out 8 flags for this bunting.
  2. Next, cut the denim. We used an old pair of kidsjeans that were outgrown and had too many holes in them to donate.  You will need to cut out 8 rectangles.  Ours are not all exactly the same size (that’s part of its charm) but they are between 3 ¼ and 3 ½ inches long and 2 ½ and 2 ¾ inches wide.
  3. Using a small paint brush draw a star on each of the blue jean patches.  You could leave them as just the outline or paint them in.  It’s all personal preference!  Let the paint dry. No Sew 4th of July Flag Bunting Burlap
  4. Cut 4 long strips of burlap.  Don’t worry about being straight or perfect.  The burlap will fray a bit.  The strips should be about 25 inches long each.
  5. Tie them together to make one long strand.
  6. Now comes piecing everything together.  Fold one side of each of your flags.  We folded ours down 2 ½ inches making each flag the same size. No Sew 4th of July Flag Bunting Piece Together
  7. Using the hot glue gun, glue on your star patches on the top right hand corner.
  8. Next, flip over your flag to the back.  Lift the ‘flap’ open and place your burlap leaving yourself enough room on the ends to hang it, hot glue the burlap to the flag.  (We hot glued each side of the burlap) Then close shut.
  9. Repeat.  We did 2 flags before each of the burlap knots on mine.
  10. Hang your flag bunting!

This DIY Patriotic Bunting Craft features easy to make flags using old blue jeans! It's a new-sew project perfect for Memorial Day or the 4th of July.
